Verdict
Wahaka's joven espadín is an honest entry mezcal; this abocado-con-gusano reposado is what happens when a good producer dresses a bottle for the gift aisle. Consensus lands at 2.2 and we agree, the solvent finish is the tell. Skip this and buy the Wahaka joven, which is the same distillery telling a straighter story.
The joven told the truth. This bottle fictionalizes it
Tasting notes
Nose: Light oak, then vanilla extract, honeyed smoke, a waxy edge
Palate: Sweet and polished at 40% with sea-salt and honey notes that read as additive rather than earned. The gusano and abocado treatment smooths the liquid past recognition
Finish: Sugary start, a harsh solvent note at the back, short
The bottom line
Skip. The joven is the Wahaka to buy
