Verdict
Xicaru Reposado is the Silver with oak-flavored water. Aging at this proof doesn't add anything – it can't, there's nothing there for the wood to work on. The category's most reliable failure mode is a thin base getting dressed in a barrel and sold at a premium, and Xicaru Reposado is a textbook illustration.
Aged commercial mezcal is twice the disappointment
Tasting notes
Nose: Vanilla, faint smoke, confected sweetness
Palate: The oak adds notes to a base that couldn't support them at 40%
Finish: Sweet, oaky. Short
