Yuu Baal Espadin
A serviceable espadín let down by the proof it chose
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Yuu Baal Mezcal
- Maestro: Isaias Martinez Juan
- Region: San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 48%
- Price: $40 ($)
Verdict
Yuu Baal's espadín is competently produced at an honest 48%, which should translate into more character than the glass delivers. The liquid feels slightly under-rested – the edges are still there. Consensus 3.1 is fair. Pour it into a Paloma; drink Banhez Ensamble or the Yuu Baal Ensamble when you want to sip.
48% is the right proof. The imagination is the missing part
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave, then light smoke, green apple, faint vanilla
Palate: Clean and direct at 48%, the espadín legible if not especially layered. Warmer than the ABV suggests, which is a compliment
Finish: Dry, a touch sharp. Medium
The bottom line
Serviceable. Sip the ensamble instead
