Zunte Mezcal
Honest espadín with a price tag that doesn't match the proof

- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 38%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Zunte is a competent small-producer mezcal bottled at a proof that handicaps its own work, the base distillation reads fine, but 38-40% is too thin a frame for the flavor to carry. Consensus 5.0 reflects a small sample; in a broader flight this lands closer to 3.5. Track the producer in case a higher-proof bottling appears; skip the current SKU if a Wahaka or Banhez is available.
A 38% bottle fighting its own label
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave, green apple, light smoke
Palate: Clean and a little thin at 38-40%, the espadín audible but softened by the low proof. The distillation feels more careful than the bottling proof permits
Finish: Short-medium, lightly sweet, clean
The bottom line
Track the producer. Skip this proof
