Verdict
Sierra negra is another under-documented varietal that shows up more on small-producer bottlings than in the big catalogs. Martínez López's version at 48% is a credible US introduction, dense, cocoa-deep, proof-forward. Buy alongside a Real Minero Largo or Gran Ignacia arroqueño for a broader Americana family study. Underrated.
Sierra Negra – arroqueño's darker younger cousin
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark cocoa with dried fruit, warm wood
Palate: 48% – sierra negra is an Americana relative that delivers a darker, richer bottle than espadín or tobalá; La Jicarita's version reads the varietal well at a serious proof
Finish: Warm, cocoa-tinged. Long
The bottom line
Buy. A rare Americana-family release
